Candidates aiming to become an ICU nurse will first need to obtain a bachelor’s degree in a relevant nursing field. This degree may also involve practising on real patients under the supervision of healthcare professionals. Once a degree has been obtained, you’ll need to become a registered nurse through the Nursing & Midwifery Council. You may then choose to pursue ICU nurse certifications to gain even more relevant experience, and improve the quality of care you’re able to provide.
Generally speaking, the role of an Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) nurse, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse, or a Critical Care Unit (CCU) nurse is the same: they care for patients experience acute injuries or illnesses, often in high-pressure, time-sensitive environments. This requires a great deal of patience and adaptability, as the exact procedures being carried out could change several times throughout the day.
