FAQ

As an on-framework agency, our roles are able to offer negotiable rates of pay based on your level of experience and location within the UK. A Band 6 forensic mental health nurse in London, for example, could earn up to £41,000 per annum. The specific salary banding for the role you’re interested in will be displayed on its respective job listing page.

The responsibilities of a forensic mental health nurse will vary depending on where you’re situated, and what’s required of your skillset on any given day. Some nurses may work in police custody as part of the Police and Liaison service, while others will work in secure hospital settings treating Medium Secure and Low Secure patients.

While your day-to-day responsibilities could vary, you’re generally required to build therapeutic relationships with your patients and help them to manage their mental health struggles. This may involve learning more about their background and history, engaging with patients in talking therapy sessions, or working with their families to learn more about their particular case.

You’ll also work with the police to advise on how to treat and interact with patients, based on your experience and ability to diagnose their mental health difficulties.

Some of the primary soft skills required by forensic mental health nurses are empathy and patience. You’ll sometimes be working with violent or dangerous offenders, and will need to approach their case with an empathetic attitude that allows you to build a trusting relationship.

Along similar lines, resilience is also crucial when working within this field. Your daily responsibilities can cause stress, and knowing how to deal with that in a productive and healthy manner will allow you to thrive within your career.
