Job Description

Currently we have an excellent opportunity NMC registered general nurse, to join a mental health hospital to ensure that all patients are receiving physical healthcare assessments on admission, and that their care needs are commensurate with the assessment and consistent with pre-existing care plans.

The hospital is a 53 bed hospital providing services in both a forensic setting (male medium secure & low secure) and acute services (mixed sex) across 4 wards.

Salary: £41,000

Hours: Full Time, Mon-Friday 9/5, Permanent

Your Key responsibilities will include

  • Ensure all patients receive physical healthcare assessments upon admission, coordinating care plans and obtaining relevant historical information and test results with medical teams.
  • Promptly document patient interactions in Electronic Clinical Records, escalating information to relevant colleagues as needed.
  • Provide briefings and support to Registered Nurses on chronic disease management, screening, diabetes, hypertension, COPD, and wound care.
  • Offer training and guidance on using physical healthcare measurement tools, including Waterlow assessments.
  • Train staff on recording, interpreting, and escalating baseline physical observations.
  • Oversee nursing care plans for patients with physical health needs, supervising newly qualified nurses on physical healthcare.
  • Liaise with Primary Care for patient-specific needs such as diabetic reviews, flu vaccines, and anticoagulant monitoring, ensuring recall services are in place.
  • Provide direct services, including ECGs, phlebotomy, and wound care, in collaboration with the medical and nursing team.
  • Lead IPC audits, reporting outbreaks or infections per policy, and ensuring compliance with the Code of Practice for IPC.
  • Serve as a resource for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and medical devices, facilitating necessary audits and checks.
  • Promote a supportive environment for patients, relatives, and carers, maintaining professional relationships and responding to inquiries courteously.
  • Lead Health Education and public health initiatives, supporting smoking cessation programmes and coordinating annual health promotion efforts

For this role, we’re looking for someone who has;

  • Qualified Registered General Nurse (RGN), with 2 years post-registration experience with active NMC Registration and completed preceptorship programme. Consideration will be given to Nurses registered in MH or LD services if they demonstrate competence in the requirements for the role.
  • Qualified Mentor or to achieve within 12 months of coming into post.
  • Knowledge of NMC guidelines and professional practices.
  • Evidence of post-registration continuing professional development.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and commitment to change, improvement, and quality.
  • Ability to develop and use flexible and innovative approaches to practice.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
