Meet Rebecca Newman, Athona’s recruitment consultant for surgery. We sat down and spoke to Rebecca to find out more about her role in recruitment and gain insight into the surgery recruitment market and how it has developed since working at Athona. Keep on reading to get to know more about Rebecca:
How did you get into recruitment?
I fell into recruitment during the second national lockdown due to coronavirus, I decided that I needed a change and wanted to feel that I was making a difference to somebody’s life. Personally, I felt that helping doctors get into their dream role in a new work place was the way I could help change someone’s life.
How has the surgery recruitment market changed since you first started?
Since starting out in recruitment during the peak of COVID-19, I have definitely noticed the market beginning to pick up. Some specialties that were previously made redundant during COVID have started to boom! It’s been great getting to know several doctors who have been out of work or covering specialties they don’t particularly enjoy.
What does a typical day look like to you?
My days are always very busy! I spend most of my day speaking to many different doctors trying to get a good understanding of their requirements and what is most important to them in a job. Furthermore, I have several client phone calls throughout the day to try and figure out what candidate would be most valuable to the trust and then later try to match the two.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
For me, doing a good job is extremely important to me as there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the doctor you placed and the hospital work successfully together.
How do you build strong relationships with each of your candidates?
Communication is vital for me – I speak to each of my doctors on a daily basis. Due to the constant conversations that I have with my doctors, I have become good friends with each of them and I think being transparent at all times is key to building a strong relationship with your candidates.
What would you say is the most challenging aspect of working in recruitment?
Working in recruitment is an extremely fast paced environment. This can be a challenge at times when faced with several other tasks that I must complete however, I enjoy a challenge and thrive under pressure.
